The Future of Simulation
Dr. Geraldine Bednash, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, provided the audience with an early history of nursing simulation, and contrasted the initial beginnings with how the field has progressed today. She highlighted examples of the synergy occurring between education and technology, and how simulation is integral to curriculum development, interdisciplinary team training, and patient safety.
Verification of Competence
Dr. Ajit Sachdeva, Director of the Education Division with the American College of Surgeons, conveyed to the audience the importance of competency verification and the contribution simulation has made in this area of education. Along with curricula for professional development, the use of simulation for assessment demonstrates cutting-edge educational programs meeting standards and criteria for accreditation.
Current Research
Dr. William McGahie, Director of Evaluation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's Translational Science Institute, examined the latest research demonstrating the transfer of learning from clinical simulation to practice. He presented a multi-tiered model that considers learning mastery, quality of patient care, and patient outcomes. Dr. McGahie's presentation reveals the necessity of evidenced-based approaches to developing and evaluating simulation-based medical education.
DoD Simulation
Dr. Thomas B. Talbot, Portfolio Manager for the US Army Medical Modeling, Simulation & Training Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center, reviewed the Department of Defense (DoD) strategic approach to clinical simulation, and provided context for better understanding the unique elements of DoD simulation. Dr. Talbot also took a look back to simulation in its infancy, traced its development through to the present, and then made some predictions on what we might expect to see in the near future.
VHA Simulation National Leadership Conference
In July 2009, the Acting Under Secretary for Health (USH), Veterans Health Administration, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approved the establishment of SimLEARN, a national simulation training, education, and research program for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). As part of SimLEARN's rollout, a Simulation National Leadership Conference was held on September 14-16, 2010, in New Orleans. The objective of this historic conference was to orient VHA Leadership on the vision and strategy for VHA's clinical simulation including:
- Education and research needs
- Evidence supporting the use of clinical simulation
- Various modalities of clinical simulation
- Educational processes
- Current technologies
- Leadership's personal roles in facilitating the strategic plan
The audience of approximately 250 participants included VHA leadership (e.g., Medical Center Directors, Associate Directors, Nurse Executives, and/or Chiefs of Staff), the VISN SimLEARN Champions and Chief Medical Officers. Presenters included Dr. Robert Jesse, the VHA Principal Deputy Under Secretary for Health; Ajit Sachdeva, Director, Division of Education, American College of Surgeons (ACS); Morgan Passiment, Director, Information Resources Outreach, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC); Geraldine Bednash, CEO and Exec. Director of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AANC); and Thomas B. Talbot, Portfolio Manager, Medical Modeling, Simulation and Training Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC); and Elizabeth Hunt, Director, Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center. Various experts from within VHA provided information on their local programs through presentations and poster sessions. VISN teams participated in strategic planning exercises to identify their clinical priorities for the deployment of simulation training.
